THE VIEW
If someone asked me what peace looks like, I think I’d hand them this painting.
The View was never about recreating a real place. It was about capturing a feeling that I wasn’t sure I could put into words.
For me, that feeling has become Ben.
One afternoon, I brought my paints with me while he was working and spent the day creating nearby. There was something so beautiful about how ordinary it was. He was doing what he loves and I was doing what I love. We weren’t trying to make a memory, but somehow we did. Looking back, those quiet hours together have become some of my favorite.
As I painted, I kept coming back to one thing.
A willow tree.
Willow trees have always been my favorite. There’s something about the way their branches gently fall toward the ground that has always made me feel at peace. They don’t have to be the loudest tree in the landscape to be the most comforting. They simply create a place to rest.
The more I thought about it, the more perfect it felt. Ben’s dad owned a tree business for many years, so the willow seemed to connect both of our stories in a quiet way. It felt like it belonged there from the beginning.
Instead of painting detailed portraits, I chose to paint us as silhouettes tucked beneath the branches. I wanted the focus to be on the feeling instead of the faces. Sometimes you don’t need every detail to remember a moment. Sometimes all you need is the feeling it left behind.
When I look at this painting, I don’t just see two people sitting under a tree. I see peace. I see comfort. I see the kind of love that lets you exhale. The kind that doesn’t need to be loud to be deeply felt.
That’s why I named it The View.
Most people would probably think the view is the willow tree or the endless greenery surrounding it. But to me, the view has never been the landscape.
The view has always been the person sitting beside me.
This painting reminds me that some of the most beautiful moments in life aren’t the ones we plan. They’re the ordinary afternoons that become the memories we carry with us. The quiet moments where nothing extraordinary happened except that we were together.
To me, that’s the most beautiful view there is.
